Church of South India elects Bishop Govada Dyvasirvadam as ModeratorDeputy Moderator of Church of South India and Bishop in Krishna-Godavari Diocese - Govada Dyvasirvadam is elected as Moderator of the Church of South India in the 34th session of Church of South India’s synod, held at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. Moderator of Church of South India and Bishop of CSI Kanyakumari Diocese, Most Rev. G Devakadasham presided the General Council. Rt Rev Dr Michael Augustine Owen Lewis, Anglican Bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf delivered the Holly sermons during the council.

The 34th session of Church of South India’s synod

The 34th session of Church of South India’s synod held at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh between January 11 and 14, 2014 for electing new Moderator and office bearers of the Synod. The Synod meeting is conducted once in two years. The last meeting was held at Kanyakumari. In the session, Deputy Moderator of CSI and Bishop in Krishna-Godavari Diocese Govada Dyvasirvadam is elected as Moderator. He defeated Bishop in Tiruchirapalli - Thanjavur Diocese – Rt. Rev. Dr. G. Paul Vasanth Kumar. The Rt. Rev Thomas Kanjirappally Oommen, Bishop in Madhya Kerala Diocese is elected Deputy Moderator defeating the Rt.Rev.Dr.K.G.Daniel, Bishop in East Kerala Diocese. The Moderator will hold charge for two years.

Bishop Govada Dyvasirvadam

Dyvasirvadam was born on March 28, 1951 in Challapalli in Krishna District to Rev. Govada Devamani and Smt. Suguna Sundaram. He was educated at Sreemanthu Raja Higher Secondary School, Challapalli in Krishna District as well as the Municipal School in Eluru in West Godavari District. He did his college studies in A.V.N. College, Visakhapatnam. He also pursued post-graduate studies in Noble College, Machilipatnam.
After studying at the Bishop's College in Calcutta, he was ordained by Bishop Henry Lazarus as a Deacon in the St. Andrew's Church in Machilipatnam in March 1978 and later he was ordained as a Priest. He enrolled for pursuing the doctoral degree in the South Asia Theological Research Institute (SATHRI) in Bangalore.
In 1998, he was elected as the General Secretary of the CSI. He was a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches headquartered in Geneva. Besides, he was a member of the General Committee of the Christian Conference of Asia Headquartered in Thailand. Now, he has been elected as the Moderator of CSI in the Synod of 2014.

Bishop Thomas Kanjirappally Oommen

Bishop Thomas K. Oommen was born on November 29, 1953 to an agricultural family at Thalavady in Alappuzha District. He did his college education at NSS Hindu College, Changanassery. He had taken undergraduate degree in divinity from Leonard Theological College, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He was ordained deacon in 1982 and was made presbyter the next year. He was elected as Bishop of Madhya Kerala Diocese on February 2011. He was ordained as the 12th Bishop of the CSI Madhya Kerala diocese on March 06, 2011 by CSI Moderator Rev S Vasanthakumar. Now, he has been elected as Deputy Moderator.
Hundreds of Bishops, Priests and laymen from 22 Dioceses from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Sri Lanka besides special invitees from abroad took part in the Synod meeting which is conducted once in two years.
