CBCI elects Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos as PresidentMoran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church is elected on February 11, 2014 as the President of Catholic Bishop Conference of India (CBCI) in the plenary session held at Pala, Kerala. Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) wishes Cardinal best of luck and prays that his eminence new position shall be a great blessings in the lives of many people. Archbishop Andrews Tazhath was also elected as Vice President I, Archbishop Felip Neri Ferao was elected as Vice President II and Archbishop Albert D’Souza was elected as Secretary General.

Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos

Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos was early this month was nominated to National Integration council. The National Integration Council originated in a conference convened by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in September–October 1961. The NIC met for the first time in June 1962. The purpose of the Council is to find ways to counter problems that divide the country due to communalism, casteism, regionalism and fundamentalism. It reviews national issues and makes recommendations to foster the integrity of the nation.
He was born on June 05, 1959 in Mukkoor in Pathanamthitta District in the State of Kerala in India. He attended the Minor Seminary Formation in Tiruvalla from 1976 to 1979. He received a B.Phil. degree from St. Joseph's Pontifical Institute, Mangalapuzha, Aluva, where he attended from 1979 to 1982. He received a B.Th. degree from the Papal Seminary, Pune where he attended from 1983 to 1986. He was ordained a priest on June 11, 1986. He studied for the Master of Theology in Dharmaram College, Bangalore where he attended from 1986 to 1989. He took his Doctorate in Ecumenical Theology from Pontifical University of St.Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), Rome in 1997.
He was appointed Cardinal of the Catholic Church by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on October 24, 2012. He is the first Cardinal of the Syro-Malankara Church and the youngest among the College of Cardinals. He is a member of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue. He is also the President of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC).
