Fr.Udayanath Bishoyi completes doctorate on anti-Christian persecutionThe latest person to finish a doctorate on Christian persecution in Kandhamal is a priest from the same Odisha district. Fr. Udayanath Bishoyi of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Archdiocese defended his doctoral research at Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth (JDV), Pontifical Institute of Philosophy and Religion, Pune recently in the topic of “The Flames of Faith: Christological Reading of the Suffering, hope and Mission of the People of Kandhamal.”
His four year research study was done during 2010-2014. He secured highest distinction for his grades. Divine Word priest - Mohan Doss was his guide. Another Divine Word Father - Francis Periera and Jesuit Father -Thomas Kuriakose were his external and internal readers respectively. Jesuit Father - Jose Thayil moderated the session.
The Flames of Faith is a symbolic title that speaks of the witnessing faith of Christian Martyrs of Kandhamal District that faced severe anti-Christian persecution in 2007 and 2008. The Flame is the values of Kingdom of God and reradiates to dispel darkness and evil in every form in the hills of Kandhamal, 264 kilometers west of Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Early Christians witnessed their faith boldly despite torture, suffering and martyrdom under Roman emperors. Likewise, Kandhamal Christians too stood up for their faith despite persecution. The dictum of Tertullian, “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church” has become a reality in Kandhamal, Fr. Bishoyi told. Plans are underway to publish the doctoral study in a book, which is expected to help future generations about Christian persecution of Kandhamal.
He was ordained in 1996 and he is currently the Director of Divyajyoti Pastoral Centre, Konjamendi, Kandhamal.
